First Light is a center for homeless women and children established by volunteers in 1983. The Center is located at 2230 Fourth Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. The mission of the center is to work with homeless women and their children to create hospitality in a safe and nurturing community. Volunteers from various churches and organizations provide the bulk of meals served at First Light. OLS provides meals and servers for dinner at the Center on a regular basis. Information about the meal is emailed to volunteers a week in advance. Volunteers sign up to bring items to the church for delivery to the Center by the servers. OLS volunteers are also involved in special projects that include providing gifts for Christmas and Easter.
